SCOUT EVENT

scouts walking

Are you aged at least 10 and are a member of a Scout Troop in Berkshire ?

The Scout Event is exclusively for Scouts who are regular members of a Scout Troop operating in Berkshire.

You must be of Scout section age to participate (that is, born on or between 6 April 1993 and 5 April 1998).

Scouts who are 13½ and are undertaking their link into Explorer Scouts should consider entry into the Explorer hike.

If you have already moved up to an Explorer Scout Unit then you cannot enter the Scout event.

Note: the core age for this event is 11 to 13. Only one 10-year old and one 14-year old may be permitted in any team.

ROUTE

The Scout event hike is 25km (around 15 miles) in length, depending on the route taken and the navigation skills of the team.

The route starts at Pangbourne some 6km west of Reading. Kit checking takes place at Pangbourne Village Hall. From there, you'll cross the Thames at Whitchurch Bridge and meander along the footpath towards Goring.

With the flat out of the way, it's back across the Thames and up and over Streatley hill before moving on to the Ridgeway via the Fairmile. You will then descend in to Blewbury village in Oxfordshire. From there, hikers will head back towards the Ridgeway via Churn Farm on the old Railway bridge and will head south to East Ilsley primary school. St John will be in attendance at this location. This is the terminus of the hike. Hikers will be transported back to base where they can then relax before the presentations on Sunday morning.

The hike will provide transport from Tilehurst to Pangbourne and in the unlikely event you need to be picked up and returned to base, we'll do that too.

TROPHIES, CERTIFICATES, BADGES, PRIZES

The overall fastest junior team receives the Three Towers Hike Junior shield. This could be awarded to any team from any part of the country.

Three further trophies are offered, the Reading Scout shield is awarded to the fastest team from Reading Central. The Berkshire Scout trophy is awarded to the fast team from Berkshire (excluding Reading Central) and the Junior Stick is awarded to the fastest all girl Scout team.

Every hiker who completes the distance will be awarded a hike badge and a certificate acknowledging their time and success.

The top three teams will be awarded various prizes from the the hike sponsor,

Cotswold Outdoor.

In 2005, the winners were presented with a tent for their Troop, while the top teams were presented with a pack of goodies from Cotswold Outdoor.
