SCOUT EVENT
25km for age 10-14 , Scout section members only
Are you aged at least 10 and are a member of a Scout Troop in Berkshire ?
The Scout Event is exclusively for Scouts who are regular members of a Scout Troop operating in Berkshire.
Teams can be either three or four Scouts in size (only applies to the Scout event)
You must be of Scout section age to participate (that is, born on or between 15 October 1997 and 14 April 2002).
Scouts who are 13 or 14 and are undertaking their link into Explorer Scouts should consider entry into the ScoutPlus hike.
If you have already moved up to an Explorer Scout Unit then you cannot enter the Scout event.
Note: the core age for this event is 11 to 13. Only one 10-year old and one 14-year old may be permitted in any team.
Entry Fees: £33 per team of three hikers.
Extra person - for the first time in 2012, you can enter a team of 4 in to the Scout section event. The team has to complete the event as a team of 4 to be eligible for prizes/trophies; in other words, should one of your four drop out, the remaining three can continue walking but will not be able to pick up a winners' prize, they will of course be able to receive the hike medal. For a 4-Scout team, just add another £11.
ROUTE
The Scout event hike is 33km (around 15 miles) in length, depending on the route taken and the navigation skills of the team.
The route starts at Pangbourne some 6km west of Reading. Kit checking takes place at Pangbourne Village Hall. From there, you'll cross the Thames at Whitchurch Bridge and meander along the footpath towards Goring.
With the flat out of the way, it's back across the Thames and up and over Streatley hill before moving on to the Ridgeway via the Fairmile. You will then descend in to Blewbury village in Oxfordshire. From there, hikers will head back towards the Ridgeway via Churn Farm on the old Railway bridge and will head south to East Ilsley primary school. St John will be in attendance at this location. This is the terminus of the hike. Hikers will be transported back to base where they can then relax before the presentations on Sunday morning.
The hike will provide transport from Tilehurst to Pangbourne and in the unlikely event you need to be picked up and returned to base, we'll do that too.
TROPHIES, CERTIFICATES, BADGES, PRIZES
The overall fastest Scout team receives the Berkshire Scouts trophy.
Further trophies may also be offered.
Every hiker who completes the distance will be awarded a hike badge and a certificate acknowledging their time and success.
The top three teams will be awarded various prizes from the the hike sponsor,
Cotswold Outdoor.
